Halal meat sector could introduce own assurance scheme
The Halal meat sector could introduce its own assurance scheme with initial ideas to be discussed at the first red meat Halal forum which will be held in Warwickshire next month.
The draft proposals are currently being written by meat levy organisation EBLEX. In addition to discussing ideas for the assurance scheme, the forum will also help shape priorities for EBLEX’s work with the Halal sector and consider recent consumer research.
In addition, there will be a discussion on forthcoming legislation and a look at a new slaughter education film which lays out the different methods of religious slaughter.
Following the meeting, the forum will meet again in the new year to review the responses to the assurance consultation and look at the main issues within the sector and where levy money can best be used to add value.
Never Miss a Retail Update!John Cross, EBLEX chairman, said: “The Halal sector is a very diverse one and it is vital that we get input from all areas to enable us to come up with informed workstreams that are of real benefit to those working within it.
“The whole event is designed to be open. Anyone with an interest in the sector is welcome and we hope it will lead to some constructive conversations that we can use to shape our activity.”
