Grocery prices creep down again in May
UK shoppers enjoyed another month of discounted popular supermarket items in May according to new research.
The study conducted by the shopping and comparison website MySupermarket.co.uk as part of its monthly Groceries Tracker shows that the cost of a basket of 35 popular products dropped in price again to cost £82.59 last month.
The research also found that UK shoppers are now 8.5% better off on each weekly shop than they were in December 2014.
When comparing the same 35 products to a year ago, MySupermarket found some items were as much as much as 25% cheaper.
The cost of broccoli was 25.71% less compared to May 2015, while the prices of onions and fresh peppers were down 24% and 15% respectively. The only items to rise more than a few pence compared to May last year were red pasta sauce, up just under 4%, along with kitchen towels and frozen chips, up just under 3%.
When compared to April this year, however, carrots were almost 20% cheaper, onions 12% cheaper, while crisps and deli bacon and ham dropped by more than 3% in price.
MySupermarket managing director Kim Ludlow said: “We’re noticing a trend in total basket price dropping – yes, that’s a fact. However, many products are fluctuating month to month and it’s in shoppers’ best interests to be across how their favourites are faring.
“Whilst you might select a retailer because its broccoli prices are lower than last year, if you look carefully you do notice that they are in fact more expensive than last month.”
MySupermarket’s Groceries Tracker monitors the cost of the same 35 most commonly bought grocery products on a monthly basis.
