Greggs trials bakery at British army base
Bakery retailer Greggs is to supply a British army base in Germany with savouries such as Cornish pasties and sausage rolls in a trial starting today.
The trial will involve the company supplying the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes, the armed forces caterer, with a range of seven frozen savouries at the British military base in Gutersloh.
The items will be baked throughout the day by Greggs-trained NAAFI personnel and displayed in a Greggs branded savoury counter.
Greggs chief executive Ken McMeikan, a Royal Navy veteran of the Falklands War, said: “It’s great to hear that Greggs was the most requested brand that troops missed from home and we are really pleased to be making our savouries accessible to our troops in Germany, and, depending on the success of the trial, more widely available for our armed forces personnel around the world.”
Never Miss a Retail Update!NAAFI currently caters for British troops in Afghanistan, Ascension, Brunei, Germany, Gibraltar, The Falkland Islands and Northern Ireland, as well as on board Royal Navy ships.
Mike Chapman, head of customer service for NAAFI, added: “We are delighted to be able to bring customers the taste of home that they have been asking for. Greggs is one of the most popular brands on the UK high street for its iconic sausage rolls and pasties, and our customers want us to deliver that to them during their NAAFI break.”
The trial will run for 12 weeks. A decision on rolling out the concept to other bases will be taken at the end of the period.
