Google targets Amazon Prime with 24 hour delivery
Google is in talks with a number of retailers about developing a service where customers purchasing goods online could have them delivered within 24 hours for a small fee.
The Wall Street Journal has reported that the internet search giant has approached a number of US companies about the concept surrounding the service including Macy’s, OfficeMax and Gap. A Macy’s spokesman told the Wall Street Journal: “They’ve approached us with the idea, but we haven’t made any decisions.”
Google is reported to be considering offering the service with Product Search, a comparison shopping feature which directs shoppers to retailer’s websites rather than selling products to consumers direct.
The move would escalate Google’s growing rivalry with Amazon which already offers its customers a one to two day delivery service through Amazon Prime for an annual charge.
WSJ said the concept could be a result of Google losing ground to Amazon in the online advertising market as an increasing number of consumers search for products directly on Amazon’s site rather than via Google.
Google plans to test the service in the San Francisco area of the US some time next year according to the report.
