Food standards body launches for Scotland

A new food regulator has been launched for Scotland that will be responsible for tackling food safety, labelling and nutrition issues.

Food Standards Scotland has taken over the responsibilities previously carried out in Scotland by the Food Standards Agency and will have an increased focus on healthy eating.

Minister for Public Health, Maureen Watt, said “This is a great day for the Scottish consumer, and for Scotland’s food and drink sector. We now have a new food body that is uniquely placed to focus on our own particular needs and priorities. Food Standards Scotland will be a trusted source of food safety advice and nutritional guidance. I wish the team all the best and I look forward to working with them to ensure that our food continues to be safe and healthy to eat.”

The new organisation will be led by chief executive Geoff Ogle who said the new body will provide a regime “responsive to Scotland’s needs.”

He added: “Our focus will be on making decisions based on the food safety, labelling and nutrition issues that affect the Scottish public most directly.”
