Easyjet founder to launch budget supermarket
Easyjet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has announced plans to launch a budget supermarket.
The billionaire has applied to trademark easyFoodstore.com with the Intellectual Property Office and will also open a pilot store in Croydon. If the pilot is successful, stores will be rolled out to other locations.
Haji-Ioannou said: “I have a feeling that there is a gap in the food retail market – a niche below some of the current budget operators such as Aldi and Lidl.
“Concentrating on affordable, basic ‘no-brand-name’ packet and tinned foods at bargain prices, easyFoodstore underlines the need for additional reliable day-to-day provision of basic foodstuffs. No other details have yet been decided.”
Never Miss a Retail Update! The business will offer a limited range of tinned and packaged foods.
A holding page for easyFoodstore.com states that the venture is “coming soon” and invites visitors to enter the email address to receive updates.
