DPD to set up own parcel shop network
Parcel delivery company DPD has announced plans to open its own parcel shop network as an alternative to click and collect this summer.
DPD plans to establish a network of 2,500 outlets with a DPD PickUp point within ten minute of most people in the UK. The company has signed up the Numark Pharmacists chain as the first member of the network.
The plans were announced at the official opening of the head office of the new division in Stoke. The building was unveiled by DPD chief executive Dwain McDonald, Stoke City Football Club player Peter Odemwingie and head of DPD pickup Des Travers.
McDonald said: “We know that some customers can’t be at home for deliveries and they currently use our in-flight options to leave parcels with a specific neighbour or in their chosen safe place, but DPD PickUp will give them another option.
“With DPD they will get real-time communication via text or email so that they know exactly where their parcel is and when they can collect it. Many online shoppers are used to click-and-collect as an option these days, so DPD PickUp gives retailers another great option for their customers at the point of sale.”
The venture will be headed up by Travers and will be fully operational from 1 June 2015.
In addition, DPD has announced that it has received planning permission for its new 60,000 square foot ‘Super-Depot’, also on the Etruria Valley site. The development is set to create 92 new jobs, in addition to the 100 staff who will move from DPD’s existing depot in Newcastle. Work is expected to begin on the six acre site in February with completion planned for September 2015.
