Dobbies celebrates 22% rise in sales

Sales at Dobbies Garden Centres climbed by 22% last year as the company opened new stores and pushed ahead with expansion plans.

In the year to 29 February 2012, sales increased to £136.4 million from the £111.9 million in the previous year. Pre-tax profits rose 5.6% to £10.5 million.

The Tesco owned company opened six new stores in the year taking the total to 32. It also plans to open new stores in East Kilbride and York as well as a joint store with Tesco in Kings Lynn.

The company said its range of budget products was proving popular with customers even though they were spending less time in their gardens this year due to the wet weather.

Chief executive James Barnes said: “We’re currently gearing up for a strong Christmas – one of our key shopping seasons – where customers traditionally enjoy spending time in our centres.”
