Currys and PC World to sell software downloads

Electrical retailers Currys and PC World are giving customers another way to buy their software, by creating a digital one-stop-shop with software downloads on their websites.

The retailers said the new offering makes them the first multi-channel retailers to make software products from brands such as Microsoft, Adobe and McAfee, available online as software downloads, as well as in-store.

From today, visitors to the retailers’ websites will be able to add digital downloads to their shopping basket. Software products available for online download will be flagged on Currys and PC World’s websites with an ‘available for download’ symbol. Customers can then click on the symbol and the relevant product will be automatically added to their shopping basket. Post purchase, customers will then be emailed a link allowing them to download the product directly to their device.

Mark Slater, computing director for Currys and PC World, said: “We are excited to be offering our customers the ability to buy and instantly use computer software where and when they need it. With the popularity of smaller, lighter laptops and tablets, as well as more and more PCs being sold without disc drives, this development is firmly in line with the trend towards convenient, downloadable content as and when people need it.”
