Costa Coffee reports 3.8% increase in like-for-like sales
Costa Coffee, the Whitbread owned coffee chain, saw like-for-like sales increase by 3.8% in the 13 weeks to 1 December.
Total system sales grew by 23.9% to £602 million in the period with franchise sales up 18.3% to £246 million. Like-for-like sales in UK equity stores were up 5.6% with transactions up 6.0%.
Earlier this week, Costa announced plans to split the business into four divisions to include Costa UK Retail, Costa Europe, Middle East and India, Costa Asia, and Costa Enterprises, with each division having its own managing director. The company said the new structure would bring a greater focus to the business.
Adrian Johnson, the chain’s chief operating officer for the UK has been appointed as managing director of Costa UK Retail with responsibility for all of the group’s stores in the UK.
Costa opened 277 new stores in the period and in 2011/12 plans to open a further 300 stores worldwide.
