Cost of groceries drops for the fourth month in a row
Consumers have enjoyed another month of below average supermarket prices according to new research by mySupermarket.co.uk.
mySupermarket’s Groceries Tracker, which monitors the cost of the same 35 most commonly bought grocery products on a monthly basis, found the cost of a basket dropped for the fourth month in a row to £84.36 in March.
This marks the lowest recorded price since the tracker was launched in December 2014.
Prices for items such as broccoli, bananas and onions all fell, with broccoli now more than a third cheaper than it was this time last year. It also dropped more than 25% in price in the last month alone.
mySupermarket managing director Kim Ludlow said: “One thing for certain is that you need to ensure you are getting the best possible price for your shop. While prices continue to drop, there are several key products that are rising, or fluctuating month to month. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by prices and promotions in-store. By comparing prices before you leave and writing a list – and sticking to it – you’ll be much better off.”
mySupermarket’s analysis also shows there were big price drops in crisps and squash drinks, both down more than 4%, and cucumbers, down more than 3%.
Bananas were more than 8% cheaper than last month and more than 16% cheaper than this time last year.
Items that rose in price included carrots, up more than 5%, deli bacon and ham, up 3%, and mushrooms, up 2%.
In March 2015 the same basket of shopping cost £87.70.
