Co-op receives 64,000 enquiries for apprenticeship roles

The Co-operative Group has revealed that it has received 64,000 internet enquiries regarding its apprenticeship scheme.

The group, which launched the scheme last June, is planning to appoint 800 new apprentices in 2012, double the number recruited last year.

Commenting on the rush of enquiries Peter Marks, Co-operative group chief executive said: “As we are getting 80 enquiries for every position we have to offer it is clear there is a need for other businesses to step up to the plate.

“We believe businesses have a real responsibility to open doors for young people by giving them opportunities to gain new skills, knowledge and experience so that together we can build a strong and successful future for young people and our country.”

The Co-operative said the £9 million Apprenticeship Academy will offer  young people transferrable skills, competitive salaries and qualifications, not just a job. Eventually, it would like to see all new recruits under the age of 25 joining the business via the Academy.

The group operates 4,800 retail trading outlets throughout the UK and employs more than 106,000 people.
