Clintons puts struggling Birthdays chain up for sale

Greeting cards retailer Clinton Cards has put its struggling Birthdays chain up for sale.

The group has appointed advisers from accountants Ernst & Young to sell the discount card chain which made a loss of £8.6 million in the 2010-2011 financial year and saw like-for-like sales drop 2.7% in the five weeks to 1 January 2012.

Clintons chief executive Darcy Willson-Rymer began a  strategic review of the group’s business after joining  Clintons last  October  from Starbucks where he was UK managing director.

A spokesperson for the group told The Independent that the review is set to be completed in late April and added: “This is critical for the successful turnaround of the business and by necessity looks at every part of the group, including both Clintons and Birthdays.”
