Cheers! Retail Bulletin writer creates Brown Sauce beer
One lucky Retail Bulletin reader can win a case of this very special ale.
Being able to create your own FMCG product to a personal specification would be an enviable project for most people. When the category is beer then the task becomes even more appealing.
Retail Bulletin journalist Glynn Davis recently found himself in exactly this position as Wales-based Brains Brewery invited him to brew a collaborative beer within its Brains Craft Brewery.
As a beer writer – as well as being a regular contributor to the Retail Bulletin, Davis is one of four journalists producing a beer this year with Brains that will be judged in December by a panel of beer experts.
Never Miss a Retail Update! With a blank sheet to start with he chose a personal favourite beer style – US brown ale. This combines the toffee and caramel flavours of traditional UK brown ale but with the addition of US hops that give a citrusy nose. The one twist on this for his brew has been the use of British Cascade hops rather than their US counterparts.
The resultant beer has been named Brown Sauce, which is a 5% mahogany coloured ale that was recently showcased at the Wales Beer Festival at the Millennium Stadium. It has also been made available in a select number of pubs. There is also a limited run in bottles.
If the beer proves popular then more could be produced later in the year. Keep an eye out for it and its label that bears some similarity to that of a well known condiment but thankfully the product contains none of its vinegary characteristics!
