Carrefour opens fifth Beijing store
French retail group continues Chinese expansion
Carrefour has opened its fifth Champion supermarket in Beijing, the Chinese capital.
The store opened just days after China fully opened to foreign retailers as a condition of its entry into the World Trade Organisation. The change means retailers no longer need to form partnerships local companies to open stores.
French group Carrefour, the world’s second biggest retailer, has been at the forefront of western retail expansion into China ahead of rivals Wal-Mart, Metro and recent arrival Tesco, also actively expanding in China. Carrefour currently has more than 50 stores in the country.
The new Champion store is in the north of Beijing in a shopping arcade containing ten shops. The supermarket contains a delicatessen area, a butchery counter and a fish counter, including a large assortment of frozen products. Champion trademark products are available on the shelves.
