Carphone Warehouse warns on ‘sexy’ pricing
Market leader comes out fighting
August 4 2003
The Carphone Warehouse has warned customers against buying mobile phones on price alone.
As rival Phones 4U launched an assault on the UK mobile phone market designed to grab share from the market leader, Carphone Warehouse warned customers “don’t be fooled by sexy pricing claims.”
The statement from Carphone Warehouse continued: “Buying a mobile phone is not like buying a pint of milk and a cut handset price does not automatically mean a good deal. Specialist advice and on-going usage costs are more important and must be considered.
“We have seen no evidence today of widespread price cuts from Phones4U. All of their alleged price cuts seem to be focused on a select few subscription models on certain tariffs, with very little change to prepay handsets. Over 50 per cent of the subscription mobile phones from The Carphone Warehouse are free already.”
The company said it would remain competitive.
