Carpetright appoints new chairman as Lord Harris gets set to retire

Carpetright has announced that executive chairman Lord Harris is to retire from the board at the end of the month. He will be succeeded by Bob Ivell who will become non-executive chairman on 1 November.

Ivell is currently non-executive chairman of Mitchells & Butlers and a senior independent director of Britvic and AGA Rangemaster Group.

His previous roles include chairman of David Lloyd Leisure, Park Resorts Group and Next Generation Clubs Pacific, and non-executive director of The Restaurant Group. With over 30 years’ experience in the food and beverage industry, he has also held executive roles with Regent Inns, Scottish & Newcastle and Whitbread.

Lord Harris said: “I am delighted we have found a very able and experienced chairman who brings tremendous skills and experience from his previous executive and non-executive roles.  After 57 years in the carpet business, it is time for me to focus on my other interests and I retire from the board confident that I leave behind a strong leadership team.”

Wilf Walsh, Carpetright chief executive, added: “On behalf of everyone at Carpetright I would like to thank Lord Harris for the huge contribution he has made since founding the business in 1988 and in developing it into the UK market leader.  We wish him the very best in his retirement.”

The carpet and flooring retailer also announced that it will issue its interim results for the 26 weeks ended 25 October on 15 December and not on 9 December as previously announced.
