Budgens promises no more tears

Tear-free onion spares consumers
August 6 2003
Supermarket chain Budgens is introducing a tear-free onion as part of its support for UK producers.

The move to stock the onion, grown by British farmers, follows Budgens recent decision to sell only British meat.
The mild tasting Supasweet onion is now in season and available in 100 Budgens stores. It is so mild that people no longer need to suffer tears as they prepare their favourite dish.
Perfect eaten either raw or lightly cooked, the versatility of Supasweets means that Budgens customers are being encouraged able to make the most of them in summer dishes such as barbequed food, salads and dips.
Stephanie Rice, Budgens marketing director, said: “At Budgens, we strive to use British producers wherever possible in all categories, and are delighted to be able to offer our customers such a fantastic home-grown product.
“We are proud to support the British farmer and British quality as a whole and we hope other retailers will follow our lead.”
