BRC releases essentail guidance on age restricted sales

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) is releasing an updated edition of its age restricted sales guidance for retailers. A month ago today
(October 1 2007) the legal age for buying tobacco and knives was raised from 16 to 18.

‘Age Restricted Sales – Due Diligence and Best Practice Guidance’ is a practical guide for store-based staff. It explains their responsibilities over sales of age-restricted goods such as alcohol, tobacco, knives, fireworks, solvents, National Lottery tickets and scratch cards, DVDs, videos and computer games.
BRC Director General Kevin Hawkins said,”This guidance offers a simple, yet comprehensive, explanation of age restriction legislation.
It provides the most up-to-date information available and is an essential tool for any retailer who trades in restricted goods.
“Ensuring staff are well trained and fully aware of their responsibilities is crucial. Staff who get it right boost a retailer’s reputation and protect their employer from damaging publicity and legal problems.”
