BRC director general to stand down
Stephen Robertson, the director general of the British Retail Consortium, has announced that he will be leaving the organisation in December after five years in post.
BRC Chairman, Rob Templeman, has written to BRC members to tell them of Robertson’s decision to stand down, saying that the announcement is being made now to allow plenty of time to find a suitable successor to be found.
Robertson joined the BRC in 2008 having spent 14 years on the boards of several major UK retailers. He served for seven years as marketing director at B&Q before leading the acquisition of Screwfix Direct, which he then chaired. He went on to be director of communications at Kingfisher and served for three years on the retail board of Woolworth plc. He currently serves on the boards of the Timpson Group and Hargreaves Lansdown as a non-executive director.
British Retail Consortium Chairman, Rob Templeman, said: “Stephen has made a sterling contribution to the BRC and has moved the organisation forwards both in its policy achievements and in its financial stability. The membership of the BRC has grown significantly under Stephen’s leadership and he will leave the BRC in a position of great strength and influence as the leading campaigning organisation for retailers.
Never Miss a Retail Update!“The search for a new Director General will start soon and Stephen has generously offered to assist in this process before stepping down. Until then, of course, it will be business as usual for Stephen and his team as the sector faces testing trading conditions.”
Robertson added: “I’m proud of the strength and capabilities of the BRC team and the important work it does. The organisation is in a good position to handle the challenges the retail sector faces. I want to be sure there is plenty of time to find the right person for the role.
“I’ll be continuing with my current non-executive roles at Timpson Group and Hargreaves Lansdown but other than that I have no plans currently to move onto anything else.”
