BRC chairman to condemn criticism of large retailers

Luke Mayhew, chairman of the British Retail Consortium, will condemn criticism of large and successful multiple retailers in a speech to 300 leading retailers at the BRC Retail Symposium today.

Mayhew will highlight the central role that multiple retailers can play in national and local economies and say that they deserve to be appreciated as the most likely catalysts of high street regeneration. He will suggest that the large retailers’ growth be used as a catalyst to revitalise UK town centres and provide the right environment for businesses to thrive. Penalising the success of large retailers will not help their smaller retail neighbours, who depend on the footfall they draw, he will say.

Mayhew, who has been chairman of BRC for two years, will step down from his role in early October and will be replaced by Rob Templeman, currently Chief Executive at Debenhams.
