Blumenthal launches hot cross buns with a twist for Waitrose

Heston Blumenthal has been experimenting again with the launch of a new hot cross bun for Waitrose.

Waitrose said the Heston from Waitrose Earl Grey & Mandarin Hot Cross Buns launched in-store this week have a bespoke flavour and shape to create something a little different for Easter.

The buns cost £1.59 for a twin pack and feature a blend of sultanas, golden sultanas, California raisins and Chilean flame raisins that have been left to infuse in Earl Grey tea overnight. Orange zest, mandarin and bergamot extracts and orange pieces are also added to complement the flavours.

It is thought that the buns could become as popular as the celebrity chef’s Christmas  puddings for the grocer, some of which sold on Ebay for  14 times the original price.

Tim Stevens, Waitrose buyer said: “Heston’s Hidden Orange Christmas Pudding was the most sought after pudding last Christmas and we’re hoping that his modern twist on another traditional seasonal favourite will have the same effect on sales of Hot Cross Buns.”
