Baugur builds stake in Woolworths

Woolworths has revealed that Icelandic retail investor Baugur has raised its shareholding to 6.18 per cent

Baugur has been a buyer of UK retail assets in recent years, and now owns coffee and tea retailer Whittard of Chelsea, jewellery retailer Mappin & Webb and fashion store Oasis.
In a statement, Woolworths said Baugur now owned 90 million Woolworths shares, though it refused to comment on whether the Icelandic group had made an approach.
Baugur is also rumoured to be interested in Thorntons, though the chocolate group also says it has not received an approach
