Barnsley town centre to be transformed by new retail development

Planning permission has been granted for a retail led regeneration of Barnsley town centre.

The £125 million project has been designed by architect Holder Mathias and will create a completely new retail centre for the town, replacing the existing Metropolitan shopping centre.

The plans for the new Marketplace Barnsley scheme feature a new central retail core that includes a major department store, seven screen cinema, and 35 retail and leisure units.  There will also be a new Market Hall to house the town’s  indoor market.

The development of the scheme will undertaken in partnership with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and Remaking Barnsley.

The project will be delivered and led by retail property specialists Ashcroft  who have  joined forces with partners Wilson Bowden Developments and Guildhouse Developments to form the 1249 Regeneration Partnership LLP.

The scheme is due for completion in 2015.
