Barker and Stonehouse introduces hydrogen delivery vehicle prototype
Furniture retailer Barker and Stonehouse is to trial of a prototype hydrogen delivery vehicle as it looks to reduce emissions above and beyond its own carbon footprint.
The vehicle has been two years in the making and is currently based at the retailer’s Lincoln test centre where delivery drivers will trial its use for 12 months from July.
Barker and Stonehouse became a Carbon Neutral Plus company in April 2021 and was the first UK furniture retailer to receive the certification. With the new vehicle emitting zero emissions, it marks the retailer’s first step in introducing a more environmentally friendly delivery service.
If found to be viable, Barker and Stonehouse will be looking to roll the vehicles out on a national basis to gradually replace its current delivery fleet.
Barker and Stonehouse’s sustainability strategy also includes initiatives to optimise delivery routes for efficiency, as well as investment in renewable energy sources for its stores and warehouses, and the use of sustainable packaging materials where possible.
James Barker, managing director of Barker and Stonehouse, said: “Further exploring the use of hydrogen-powered vehicles forms part of our commitment to environmental responsibility and aligns with our goal of minimising our impact on the planet. We are proud to be pioneers in exploring the possibilities of this exciting potential shift.”
