Asos resumes taking orders after warehouse fire
Online fashion retailer Asos has resumed taking orders at 2am this morning after trade was temporarily suspended following a fire at its Barnsley distribution centre on Friday.
The fire broke out at 9.50 pm on Friday night and is being treated as deliberate following initial investigations by the South Yorkshire Police.
Asos said at the end of May the business held £159 million of stock of which around 70% was held at Barnsley.
In a statement issued this morning, the company said: “None of the technology, automation or structure of the building has been affected by the fire.
Never Miss a Retail Update!“Our initial estimate is that approximately 20% of the total stock at the site has been compromised by fire damage and the sprinkler systems.
“The clean-up process commenced on Saturday morning and progressed quickly. Consequently at 2am this morning we recommenced taking orders. We are fully insured for loss of stock and business interruption.”
Asos said there were no injuries at the site thanks to the swift action taken by by its team at the site and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.
The company has been advised by the police that they are treating the incident as deliberate and have commenced a criminal enquiry. Asos said it was “co-operating fully” with the investigation.
