Asda to open general merchandise store

New standalone format for supermarket operator
Asda is to build on its trial of standalone George clothing stores with a second non-food format focusing on general merchandise.
The Wal-Mart owned UK supermarket will open a store at the Crown Wharf Retail Park in Walsall this autumn, featuring George clothing alongside products such as DVDs, electrical goods and jewellery. All are successful categories from the growing non-food offer at Asda supermarkets.
The roll out of Asda priced general merchandise in UK high streets would throw down the gauntlet to retailers such as Woolworths and Wilkinsons, with a successful trial likely to revive speculation that Wal-Mart may target a high street player as a takeover target.
