Asda to close George stores
Asda is to close its stand alone chain of George clothing shops after just four years.
Asda had concluded that its clothing concept could not be be sufficiently profitable because of high rent charges in city locations. It said it its non-food business would be centered on its out-of-town Asda Living clothing and homewares chain, which will still sell the George brand.
Anthony Thompson, a former Marks & Spencer executive who runs George, said that Asda had made a decision to focus it efforts on the Asda Living format “We are very pleased with how Asda Living is performing and we believe it has great potential. We believe that the out-of-town format is better than the high street,” he said.Asda Living, launched in 2004, sells clothes and homewares and the company and operates from 16 stand alone stores so far.
