Asda plans Yorkshire investment with two new store proposals
Asda has announced renewed plans for two new Yorkshire stores in Elland and in Mosborough in south-east Sheffield.
The retailer has been keen to invest in both areas for a number of years and says it is delighted to have the opportunities to do so. The stores will together create over 600 new full and part time jobs for local people.
The potential of such significant local investment comes at a time when the fall-out from the economic recession is still being felt by many people and little investment has been made elsewhere. The new ASDA stores would bring a range of notable long-term benefits to both areas, not least a substantial improvement in retail choice and competition – a potential boon for local consumers.
Additionally, the new ASDA jobs will result in hundreds of thousands of pounds newly reaching local households each year. Although the employment situation has slightly improved in Sheffield of late, those wards in the south-east have still seen Jobseeker Allowance (JSA) claimants rising in the last two years. The salaries generated by the new store would go a long way towards further improving the local economy in the long-term.
In addition to benefitting local shoppers, the proposal has designed within it strong links between the Asda site and Elland town centre. These links stand to increase shopper footfall in the town overall, with the potential to bring notable spin-off benefits for existing traders.
Asda Property Communications Manager, Philip Bartram, said,”We are delighted to be demonstrating our continued commitment to Yorkshire at this time. We remain of the view that a new Asda store will deliver major benefits to both areas for many years to come, and are especially pleased to be proposing these major investments at a time when so many people are still facing tough financial challenges. Whilst we firmly believe in this scheme, we are very keen to hear the views of the community and are currently consulting local people on their thoughts and wishes for the stores.”
