Amazon to open new distribution centre in Staffordshire
Online retailer Amazon has announced plans to open a new distribution centre in Rugeley, Staffordshire. The 700,000 sq ft centre will start processing orders in September and will create 900 jobs.
The announcement follows news last month that Amazon will open a one million sq ft fulfilment centre in Dunfermline before the end of the year which will require 750 permanent and 1,500 temporary workers during peak times. The company is also opening a customer service centre in Edinburgh next month, with a further 900 jobs being created.
Amazon has six fulfilment centres in the UK – Glenrothes and Gourock in Scotland, Swansea in Wales, and Marston Gate, Peterborough and Doncaster in England.
Arthur Valdez, vice-president of operations at Amazon.co.uk, said: “The centre at Rugeley will play an important role in fulfilling orders for customers in the UK, Europe and all over the world.”
An Amazon spokesman said it has been investing in capacity to meet the increasing demand for Kindles and to accommodate new product ranges.
