Amazon launches daily deals service in London

Online giant Amazon has entered the UK daily deals market as it looks compete with established players such as Groupon and Living Social.

The AmazonLocal service will initially offer deals in London and will operate in a similar way to existing deal programmes by emailing localised offers to subscribers’ inboxes each day. The programme will also offer existing Amazon credit card holders extra reward points when they make a purchase with their cards.

“Our aim is to be the place where customers can come to find anything that they want to buy online, so offering great deals from local businesses like restaurants, spas and theatres is a logical addition to the tens of millions of products that can already be found at Amazon,” said Gordon Willoughby, director of AmazonLocal for Europe.

“This is day one for AmazonLocal.co.uk and we will focus our efforts on providing a first rate customer experience for Londoners.”

Amazon said it was working quickly to bring other businesses on board to offer deals around the rest of the UK although it is not yet known when the service will be launched outside of London.
