Amazon acquires The Book Depository
Amazon.com has agreed to buy UK online book seller The Book Depository for an undisclosed sum.
The purchase follows just six months after Amazon acquired the UK film subscription service Lovefilm.
The Book Depository is expected to achieve sales of £120 million for the year to June 2011 according to the Bookseller.com. Its operating profit last year was £2.3 million. The company describes itself as the UK’s largest dedicated online bookseller, selling more than six million books worldwide.
On The Book Depository website, the company is looking to reassure its customers that its range of books and level of customer service will improve after the acquisition by Amazon.
The company said: “The Book Depository and Amazon are aligned in wanting to ensure the best possible experience for customers. Working with Amazon we will look to continue to increase our vast selection of great titles and provide even better customer experience.”
Amazon’s vice-president of European retail Greg Greeley said: “The Book Depository is very focused on serving its customers around the world, and we look forward to welcoming them to the Amazon family.”
