Alexon suffers in tough climate
Challenging market hits clothing retail group
Alexon has continued to see sales suffer as clothing retailers bear the brunt of the current tough UK retail climate.
In a statement to shareholders at its annual meeting, Alexon said “the climate in which the Group operates has continued to be challenging, with like-for-like sales for the eighteen weeks ending June 4 down 3.6 per cent on the prior year. Gross margins are slightly ahead of last year.”
The Alexon Brands arm has seen satisfactory trading despite the effect of closure of brand concessions in Allders’ department stores.
The Bay Trading chain has seen “some improved performance” against weak comparatives with last year. The group’s menswear brand and the Dolcis shoe chain “are both continuing to experience sluggish trading conditions”.
