Aldi ditches plastic from wipes

Aldi has committed to removing single-use plastic from all its own-brand wipes by the summer as it look to reduce plastic waste.

This will involve switching all wipes across its Mamia baby, Lacura beauty and household ranges to 100% plant-based fibres to make them biodegradable.

Aldi estimates the move will prevent the equivalent of 7,000 tonnes of single-use plastic from going to landfill each year.

Richard Gorman, plastics and packaging director at Aldi, said: “Moving to biodegradable wipes is another step forward in our commitment to reduce plastic across our ranges. It’s becoming increasingly important to our customers that their everyday products are environmentally friendly, and we’re pleased that this move will help them on their journey.”

Aldi has pledged to halve the volume of plastic packaging it uses by 2025, which will see it remove 74,000 tonnes of plastic from circulation. The supermarket said it is track for all its own-label product packaging to be recyclable, reusable or compostable by the end of 2022, and branded products sold at Aldi by 2025.
