Ahold to sell US c-store chain

Dutch supermarket giant Ahold continues to dispose of non-core operations with the sale of its US c-store chain Golden Gallon to convenience retailer The Pantry.
Ahold said the sale of Golden Gallon, a 138-store fuel and merchandise chain in the southeastern US, is part of its strategy to focus on core food businesses. Golden Gallon stores are situated along highways and in suburban areas. The chain’s 2002 sales were around $375m
More than 1,000 store employees will transfer to The Pantry, which also has the option of hiring around 70 non-store-based employees.
The Pantry, based in North Carolina, is the leading c-store operator in the southeastern US, operating around 1,300 stores under a range of fascias in 10 states, including Quick Stop, Zip Mart, Kangaroo, Fast Lane, Big K.
