45% plan to shop online during Cyber Monday Week

Cyber Monday, the first Monday of December, is known as the busiest shopping day of the year before Christmas and this year falls on the 6th of December.

Cyber Monday sales start on 29 November in the US and Germany with some US based retailers promoting Cyber Monday sales on their UK websites.

According to a new CyberMonday.co.uk online survey conducted by YouGov, 45% of online UK adults plan to shop online between 29 November and 6 December with 27% to spend over 200 GBP online for Christmas gifts this year. Almost three fifths (57%) of those aged 25 to 44 plan to shop Cyber Monday week versus just 35% aged 55+.

The Cyber Monday peak can be attributed to workers receiving their last pay cheque before Christmas, taking advantage of fast Internet during lunch at the office without fussy family around and needing packages delivered early before December holiday leave. According to Matthew Cheng, MD of eCoupons.co.uk and creator of CyberMonday.co.uk, “Not only are US based retailers like Apple and Adobe having global Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales this year, but now many UK retailers are embracing the Cyber Monday sale concept.”

David Smith, MD of IMRG said, “Last year, 350m pounds was spent on Cyber Monday. Growth for the first three quarters of 2010 has averaged 16% above last year and 3 percentage points above our 2010 forecast. During the fourth quarter we predict Britons will spend 17.4 billion pounds shopping online, up from 15 billion pounds in the fourth quarter of 2009.”
