Work commences on extending and enhancing Co-op’s Newhouse distribution depot
Works on a new £12 million facility to extend and enhance Co-op’s Newhouse distribution centre east of Glasgow is now underway.
The new space, which is pre-let to the Co-op and will provide specialist de-kit facilities, is expected to be handed over to the retailer in October 2022.
The unit sits next to the Co-op’s existing 500,000 square foot distribution facility just off the M8, which services and supports over 600 food stores throughout Scotland and northern England.
The retailer has previously confirmed that it has committed to the site until at least 2040.
Andy Baird, general manager at Co-op’s distribution depot, said: “Co-op is committed to serving and supporting its communities and we work to ensure we deliver the products that our members and customers want and need, conveniently. We are delighted to have committed to the Newhouse site, and with the additional warehouse offering specialist facilities to support our operations we are making sure we have the right distribution facilities in place to continue to deliver improved services and access to food conveniently for our communities now and, in the future.”
Luddon Construction has started on site to deliver the 47,585 square foot warehouse for Tulchan Developments in a joint venture with landowner Fusion Assets. A sod-cutting ceremony was held to mark the start of construction with Co-op colleagues joining representatives from the partners involved.
