Wine merchant Oddbins prepares to appoint administrators

The owner of Oddbins has filed a notice of intention to appoint Duff & Phelps as administrators after it experienced a tough Christmas trading period.

If the administration goes ahead, the move will put more than 500 jobs at risk. In addition to Oddbins, European Food Brokers owns Wine Cellar Trading and Whittalls Wine Merchants.

A spokesperson for European Food Brokers said: “The deterioration of the high street, combined with the continuing economic uncertainty surrounding the withdrawal of the UK from the EU, has resulted in an unsustainable, tough physical retail market.

“We will endeavour to continue to operate all stores as going concern while options for are assessed for the business, including a possible sale. All businesses continue to trade until further notice.”

Oddbins previously went into administration in 2011 when it was acquired by EFB.
