Waitrose to open new fulfilment centre in Enfield

Waitrose & Partners has acquired a 110,000 square foot property in Enfield for use as a customer fulfilment centre.

The new facility will open in the spring of next year.

The announcement is the third in a series of big moves by the retailer as it looks to treble its online business to £1 billion within three years. Last week, it signed an outline agreement with Today Development Partners to develop three further customer fulfilment centres with state-of-the-art technology and also appointed Ben Stimson to the new role of digital director to accelerate its online growth and operations.

Stimson said: “Waitrose.com growth is rapid and we know there are many more new customers who would like to buy our products from us online. This centre is the latest in an exciting raft of investments and will ensure they have a really convenient, easy way to do so.”

The Enfield centre marks the next stage of online investment by the retailer following the injection of more than £80 million into its online business during the last five years. Waitrose has also been investing in finding new ways to reach more customers online. This has included a trial in London called While You’re Away where groceries are delivered to customers’ homes and put away while they are out, and the Rapid Delivery service where orders can be received within two hours of ordering.
