Waitrose to close two unprofitable stores in Newcastle and Croydon

Waitrose has confirmed that it is to close two unprofitable stores in Newcastle city centre and Croydon later this year.

The shops in Newcastle’s Eldon Square and Croydon’s George Street will be shuttered on 12 November.

The news means 200 jobs are at risk although the John Lewis Partnership said it would try to find affected staff new roles at the business, including within its online operations, in Waitrose local stores and at the John Lewis department store.

Waitrose told The Mirror: “We have found trading challenging in these shops in the last few years and, despite the best efforts of partners, we have not been able to find a way to make the shops profitable in the long-term.”
