Vegan sausage roll boosts sales at Greggs
Greggs, the bakery food-to-go retailer, has said it made an exceptionally strong start to 2019 after it benefited from the publicity generated by the launch of its vegan-friendly sausage rolls.
In the seven weeks to 16 February, total sales increased by 14.1% while company-managed shop like-for-likes climbed by 9.6% following good trading at the end of 2018.
The retailer said the launch of its vegan sausage roll in January led customer transactions to increase, with the extra sales mainly coming from the vegan product and other sausage rolls and bakes.
Although the rate of sales growth has eased slightly in February, Greggs said it now anticipates that its full year underlying pre-tax profit, excluding exceptional charges, is likely to be ahead of previous forecasts.
Greggs operates 1,950 retail outlets across the UK. It will release its full year results on 7 March.
