Tesco to open 750 convenience stores in Thailand

Tesco is to launch 750 new convenience stores in Thailand over the next three years.

The supermarket entered the country in 1998 and currently operates a network of more than 2,000 stores as well as online shopping platforms.

This is Money has reported that the supermarket is keen to expand in Thailand due its growing number of young and affluent people living in urban areas.

Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis said: “The economics of the country are very attractive. There is a big emerging middle class.”

The move will create 10,000 new jobs in Thailand. It will be Tesco’s first major overseas expansion exercise since Lewis joined the business five years ago.
