Tesco to cut around 400 jobs
Tesco is to cut around 400 jobs as part of plans to “simplify” its business operations.
The move will impact jobs in its in-store bakeries and mobile phone shops, as well as its head office in Welwyn Garden City.
The supermarket said it is having to find more efficient ways of working as the grocery sector becomes increasingly competitive.
Matthew Barnes, Tesco’s UK head, said: “These are difficult decisions affecting our colleagues, but we believe they are necessary to enable us to invest in what matters most to our customers.
Never Miss a Retail Update!“Our priority is to support affected colleagues and we will do everything we can to help them find alternative roles within our business. Today we have almost 1,000 vacancies available.”
Tesco has also announced that it is launching a consultation over the closure of its distribution centre in Snodland in Kent as it looks ahead to opening a new site in Aylesford, around three miles away. Affected staff at Snodland will be offered roles at the new facility.
