Tesco appoints Gerry Murphy as chair

Tesco has confirmed that Gerry Murphy will join its board and be appointed as its new chair on 1 September.

Currently chair of Tate & Lyle and luxury brand Burberry, he will step down from his Tate & Lyle role on the same to date to ensure he has sufficient capacity to take on the new position.

Murphy is a former chief executive of B&Q’s parent company Kingfisher. Prior to that, he headed up Carlton Communications, Exel and Greencore Group.

He has also previously served as a non-executive director at British American Tobacco, Merlin Entertainments, Novar, Abbey National  and Reckitt Benckiser.

Byron Grote, interim chair of Tesco, said: “The board conducted an extensive search for a new chair and we are delighted that Gerry is joining the board and taking on the chair role.

“He was the unanimous choice of the board and will bring to our board a record of strong and effective boardroom leadership and a deep understanding of retail and consumer-focused businesses and corporate governance.”

Murphy will replace John Allan who stepped down earlier this year following allegations of misconduct.
