Sainsbury’s extends Aldi Price Match to convenience stores
Sainsbury’s has announced that it has become the first UK grocer to extend an Aldi Price Match initiative into convenience stores.
The retailer said the offering in Sainsbury’s Local shops spans the items that households buy most often, including daily staples such as milk, bread, butter, jam, peanut butter, honey, pasta, rice, salad, tuna, chicken, steak, potatoes and vegetable oil.
Replacing Pocket Friendly Prices, the move forms part of Sainsbury’s Next Level strategy and follows a recent reset of its convenience business which has included updates to store layouts and product ranges.
Simon Roberts, chief executive at Sainsbury’s, said: “In our Sainsbury’s Locals, we’ve worked hard to offer market leading prices on essential items and popular breakfast, lunch and dinner staples.
“We have also refreshed our Local store layouts and rebalanced space, increasing the number of products in store by 7% and adding more food on the move products – the primary mission of most convenience shoppers.
“When you’re shopping in Sainsbury’s Locals, you can be sure of excellent value, quality and choice.“
Examples of products price matched to Aldi include By Sainsbury’s Spaghetti Pasta 500g at 75 pence and By Sainsbury’s Chopped Tomatoes Can 400g at 47 pence.
Since announcing four years ago that it was putting food back at the heart of its business, Sainsbury’s has invested nearly £1 billion in value.
Roberts added: “With Christmas just around the corner, we know that every penny counts and we are committed to helping our customers make the most of the festive season.”
