Sainsbury’s takes free herbs and spices to the North East of England

Sainsbury’s is taking its Seasonings Shuttle service to users of The Bread and Butter Thing’s mobile food clubs in the North East following the success of the initiative in Manchester.

The move follows a study which found that over 62% of people surveyed in the area would like to enhance meals by adding herbs and spices if they could afford to buy them.

During August, the supermarket will be aiming to provide 1,600 food club members across Durham, North Tyneside, Hartlepool and Stockton with products that they wouldn’t usually receive in their shopping bags.

Visitors to the shuttle will be able to take a range of jars and fresh options away so they can use the seasonings when preparing meals at home.

Sainsbury’s will be offering free dried herbs such as oregano, parsley, and basil, as well as fresh herbs including chillies, ginger and garlic. Spices such as smoked paprika, garam masala and ground cinnamon will also be offered.

The Seasonings Shuttle is part of Sainsbury’s Nourish the Nation programme run in partnership with Comic Relief .

The supermarket has also recently announced that it will be donating over £2.5 million to Comic Relief to help children and families access healthy and nutritious food this summer.

Ruth Cranston, director of corporate responsibility and sustainability at Sainsbury’s, said: “Following the success of the Seasonings Shuttle in Greater Manchester it’s brilliant to be launching it in more communities so we can continue to keep reaching more people across the UK.

“We hope that the Seasonings Shuttle will make mealtimes more varied and enjoyable for The Bread and Butter Thing’s members, helping them to stock up on herbs and spices so they can create more flavoursome and fulfilling dishes for many meals to come.

“With herbs and spices often getting left off shopping lists due to needing to prioritise other items, we wanted to create an initiative that supports our belief that everyone should have access to tasty and diverse food.”
