Pret A Manger scales back ‘too good to be true’ coffee subscription

Pret A Manger is revamping its subscription scheme and scrapping its offer of five free coffees per day for subscribers.

For a fee of £30 a month, the current scheme gives customers access to five free barista made drinks per day and 20% off food.

From September, Pret will replace this with a “new and simpler” offer where Club Pret subscribers will get 50% off up to five barista made drinks a day for a reduced monthly fee of £10, although existing and new subscribers will pay £5 until 31 March 2025.

Pret will also be removing the the 20% discount on food due to the dual pricing on food products being something it “never really got comfortable with”.

The company introduced its subscription scheme in the autumn of 2020 as it looked to drum up business during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a blog post announcing the change, Clare Clough, UK & Ireland managing director of Pret A Manger, said: “It was an innovative way to reconnect with our loyal customers and introduce Pret to tens of thousands of new ones, bringing customers back into our shops with an offer that almost seemed ‘too good to be true’.

“Four years and over a quarter of a billion coffees later, we have decided that it’s time to rethink how it works.

“We know this is a change. But with Club Pret subscription, our coffees, teas, Coolers and iced drinks will continue to be the best offer on the high street, and at a much more accessible price than the £360 a year people have to pay for the current scheme.”

Pret has also announced that it has cut the price of its signature 100% organic Arabica Filter Coffee to 99p and dropped the price of its All Butter Croissant to £1.99.

Clough added: “By making these changes, we are underlining our commitment to providing better value for all our Pret customers, as well as the Pret quality and service you’ve come to know and expect.”
