Ocado to help Spanish supermarket Alcampo develop its online business

Ocado has signed an agreement with Auchan Retail to enable it to help the Alcampo Spanish supermarket chain to develop its online business.

Auchan operates a network of 310 Alcampo stores in Spain, of which 135 are franchises. Alcampo’s revenue reached €4.5 billion in 2020.

Under the terms of the agreement, Ocado and Alcampo will initially build a customer fulfilment centre to serve the Madrid area from 2024, with additional facilities to be announced at future dates. Alcampo will also benefit from Ocado’s in-store fulfilment software across its hypermarkets to make picking from stores more efficient. The agreement will cover both Alcampo’s food and non-food business.

In addition, Ocado will provide Alcampo with its Ocado Smart Platform end-to-end software platform and a suite of engineering and support services to ensure the smooth launch and ongoing development of ecommerce operations.

Tim Steiner, chief executive of Ocado Group, said: “The appetite for our unique end-to-end platform remains strong as retailers look to take advantage of the channel shift which is now redrawing the landscape of the global grocery market.

“Our partnership with Alcampo will bring the very best online grocery experience to customers in another major retail market, with proven and sustainable economics. We look forward to helping Alcampo change the way customers shop in Spain, for good.”
