Motatos to launch in the UK
Swedish supermarket Motatos will be launching in the UK next month.
The chain is known for offering shoppers discounted prices on surplus stock supplied from wholesalers and manufacturers.
According to The Grocer, the retailer will promise UK shoppers “well known products that would otherwise risk ending up in landfill” due to changes in packaging, seasonal changes or short best before dates.
Founded in 2014 in Sweden where it is known as Matsmart, the company has also expanded into Denmark, Finland and Germany.
Motatos has embarked on a number of partnerships with distributors such as Pricecheck and Wholegood ahead of the UK launch. It is understood that it will only be offering ambient goods in the UK, as in its other markets.
Customer deliveries will be made through third party companies and will typically take one to three working days to arrive. Fees for deliveries will be calculated according to the number of boxes needed to package the order.
Motatos has recently appointed Christabel Biella as UK country manager. She previously worked at Farmdrop and has also held buying and merchandising roles at Cult Furniture, Swoon and TK Maxx.
The company has also appointed Andrew Jeeves as UK buyer.
