Majestic enjoys strong festive sales
Majestic Wine increased both its group sales and gross margin over its Christmas trading period.
The ten weeks to 31 December saw the retailer’s group sales climb by 6.3% on an underlying basis with its gross margin edging up 0.4%.
Majestic said its performance was boosted by strong trading at Naked Wines where sales were up 15.9%.
Meanwhile its Majestic retail business increased its sales by 1.5% in the period despite challenging trading conditions.
The group receives around 30% of its total annual sales during the festive period.
Rowan Gormley, Majestic Wine group chief executive, said: “While trading has been challenging over the Christmas period, the trends we reported in November are the same (namely strong growth in our overseas markets and our digital propositions but headwinds for our UK retail stores). We look forward to setting out more of our future plans for the group, including the retail business with our full year results in June.”
